Zakat Gold Calculator

Zakat on gold is due once your holding passes the nisab threshold. This calculator values your gold at today’s live rate. It then checks the threshold and works out the 2.5% amount.

Uses the 85 gram pure gold nisab and a 2.5% rate on holdings kept for a lunar year. Scholars differ on whether jewellery in regular personal use is included. This is a calculation aid, not a religious ruling.

What the nisab is

Nisab is the minimum holding at which zakat becomes payable. For gold it is classically set at 85 grams of pure gold. That is roughly the weight of 7.5 tola.

The threshold is measured in pure gold, not in item weight. So 100 grams of 22K is not 100 grams of pure gold. The calculator converts for you automatically.

How the calculation works

First your weight is multiplied by the live rate for your karat. That gives the market value of your holding. The same value is expressed as an equivalent in pure gold.

If that pure equivalent reaches 85 grams, zakat applies. The amount due is 2.5% of the gold’s value. If you sit below the threshold, no zakat is due on gold alone.

The lunar year condition

Zakat applies to wealth held for one full lunar year. The lunar year is about 354 days. Many people simply pick a fixed date each year and keep to it.

Using a consistent date makes the calculation far easier to track. Gold prices move daily, so the date you choose changes the amount. Our price chart shows how much it can vary.

Which gold counts

Some scholars exempt everyday worn jewellery entirely. Others include it regardless of use. Ask someone qualified if your situation is unclear.

Valuing your gold accurately

Zakat is calculated on metal value, not on the price you paid. Making charges are not part of the calculation. Use the per gram rate for your karat.

If your pieces are mixed karats, value each group separately. The weight converter helps if your records are in tola. Add the results together for your total.
