How the Gold Price Is Calculated in the UAE

Every gold rate you see in the UAE comes from one global number and three fixed steps. Once you know them, you can check any shop quote yourself. The table below works through today’s price live.

Today’s price, calculated step by step

These figures are computed from the latest international spot reading. Nothing here is typed in by hand, so the example always matches today.

Step 1: the international spot price

Gold trades globally in US dollars per troy ounce, quoted as XAU/USD. The price is set continuously by the London and New York markets and futures trading. No UAE shop, souk or emirate sets it.

That is why the metal rate is identical in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and every other emirate. Local shops only add charges on top. Track the dollar figure on our per ounce page.

Step 2: converting dollars to dirhams

The UAE dirham has been pegged to the US dollar at 3.6725 since 1997. The Central Bank of the UAE holds that rate fixed. So multiplying the dollar price by 3.6725 gives the exact dirham price per ounce.

Because the peg never moves, UAE buyers carry no currency risk on gold. A buyer in India or Pakistan sees gold move twice, once with the metal and once with their currency. A UAE buyer sees only the metal.

Step 3: from ounces to grams

A troy ounce is 31.1035 grams, the standard for precious metals worldwide. Dividing the dirham ounce price by 31.1035 gives the value of one gram of pure gold. Our weight converter handles tola and other units the same way.

Step 4: applying karat purity

Karat measures how much of each gram is pure gold, out of 24 parts. The pure gram value is multiplied by that fraction.

Our purity and hallmark guide explains how each stamp is verified. The full formula, with every constant, is published in our methodology.

Step 5: from metal value to the shop price

The karat rate is the value of the metal only. A jeweller then adds a making charge for design and labour. VAT at 5% applies to the metal and the making charge together.

Making charges vary far more than the metal ever does. Plain machine chains may carry a few percent, while bridal sets can exceed 25%. Our making charges guide lists typical ranges by type.

How to check a quote in under a minute

  1. Ask for the net gold weight in grams, excluding stones.
  2. Multiply it by today’s rate for that karat.
  3. Subtract that from the pre VAT price. What remains is the making charge.
  4. Divide the making charge by the metal value to see it as a percentage.

The making charge calculator does these steps for you. The gold calculator builds a full receipt from weight and karat.

Selling works the same way in reverse

When you sell, the buyer starts from the same metal value. They deduct stones and apply their own margin. Making charges are never refunded, because they paid for labour, not gold.

Estimate a payout with the scrap gold calculator. The used gold price page shows today’s metal value by karat.

Frequently asked questions

How is the gold rate calculated in the UAE?

The international spot price in dollars per ounce is multiplied by 3.6725, divided by 31.1035, then multiplied by the karat purity. That gives the dirham price per gram.

Why is the gold rate the same in every emirate?

Because every step uses global or fixed inputs. Only making charges and shop margins differ locally.

Is VAT included in the gold rate?

No. The published rate is metal value before VAT. Shops add 5% VAT on metal and making charge at the till.

Why does my shop quote more than the rate on this page?

The difference is the making charge, any stones and VAT. Divide the extra by the metal value to see the making charge as a percentage.
