Where each unit is actually used

UAE shop tickets, scales and tax invoices all work in grams. The tola survives in conversation and on heavier South Asian pieces. The troy ounce belongs to the world market and to bullion contracts.

Confusion usually happens at the boundary between two of them. A shop quotes grams while a relative back home talks in tola. Converting once, correctly, removes the argument.

The exact constants behind the tool

• 1 troy ounce equals 31.1035 grams, the international standard for precious metals.
• 1 tola equals 11.6638 grams, fixed under British India at 180 grains.
• 1 masha equals about 0.972 grams, one twelfth of a tola.
• 1 ratti equals about 0.1215 grams, one eighth of a masha.
• 1 kilogram equals 1,000 grams, or about 32.15 troy ounces.

None of these constants change, so a conversion is arithmetic rather than a market question. Only the value attached to the weight moves.

Why a troy ounce is not a kitchen ounce

The avoirdupois ounce used for food weighs about 28.35 grams. The troy ounce used for gold weighs 31.1035 grams. That is roughly a 10% difference, which is a very expensive mistake on a bullion purchase.

If a listing simply says ounces, confirm which one is meant. Precious metal dealers always mean troy. Our per ounce page uses the troy ounce throughout.
